What the EPSO numerical reasoning test is

Each numerical reasoning question gives you a data table — population figures, trade volumes, budget lines — with several columns, some of which are deliberately irrelevant. The question asks for one derived value: a percentage change, a ratio, a per-capita figure. The mathematics never goes beyond percentages, ratios and averages; the real skill is locating the right cells fast and ignoring the distractor columns.

Under EPSO/AD/427/26 (AD5 2026) the test has 10 questions in 20 minutes — a full two minutes per question, the most generous timing of any EPSO test. That time is there because each question requires two or three chained calculation steps, and because the option sets include values you get by making typical mistakes (using the wrong year, forgetting a unit conversion).

How it is scored — and why the strategy is different

In the AD5 2026 model, numerical reasoning is scored together with abstract reasoning as a single pass/fail gate: 10 points out of the combined 20, and it does not add points to your ranking. Your ranking comes from verbal reasoning (35%), EU Knowledge (25%), Digital Skills (25%) and the EUFTE written test (15%).

This changes your preparation strategy: you need to be reliably safe above the threshold, not maximal. Candidates who over-invest in numerical drills at the expense of the ranked tests are optimising the wrong variable. In CAST, the same combined gate applies and reasoning results stay valid for 10 years. As always, formats are set per competition — check your Notice of Competition.

Common traps

Wrong row or column: the table shows 2023 and 2024 side by side and the question asks about 2024 — under pressure you compute the right operation on the wrong year. Anchor the row and column with your cursor before calculating.

Percentage-point versus percent: an increase from 10% to 12% is 2 percentage points but a 20% relative increase. EPSO options routinely include both numbers.

Unit mismatches: tables mix thousands and millions, or quarterly and annual figures. If your result looks suspiciously round or absurdly large, re-check units before picking an answer.

How to practise effectively

Practise reading the table before the question: 20 seconds spent mapping what each column means saves 40 seconds of recalculation. Learn to estimate first — a rough order-of-magnitude guess eliminates two or three options before you touch the calculator.
