What the EPSO abstract reasoning test is

Abstract reasoning shows you a sequence of frames โ€” shapes that rotate, change colour, multiply, reflect โ€” and asks which figure comes next. It is the only fully language-neutral EPSO test: no vocabulary, no domain knowledge, just your ability to extract the rule that drives the sequence.

Under EPSO/AD/427/26 (AD5 2026) it has 10 questions in 10 minutes โ€” a strict minute per question. The rules themselves come from a limited repertoire: rotation (90ยฐ/180ยฐ), reflection, element addition or removal, colour alternation, size progression, movement along a path, and combinations of two rules at once. Difficulty comes from stacking rules, not from exotic ones.

How it is scored

In the AD5 2026 model, abstract reasoning is scored jointly with numerical reasoning as one pass/fail gate: 10 points out of the combined 20. It does not add points to your ranking โ€” that comes from verbal reasoning (35%), EU Knowledge (25%), Digital Skills (25%) and EUFTE (15%). In CAST, the same combined gate applies and results are valid for 10 years.

How to find the rule fast

Isolate one element at a time: track only the black square across all frames, then only the arrow. Trying to see "the whole pattern" at once is the most common way to burn 60 seconds.

Verify against every frame, not just the last: a candidate rule that fits frames 4โ†’5 but breaks at 2โ†’3 is wrong, and EPSO builds distractor options precisely for people who only check the final transition.

When two rules run in parallel (rotation + colour change), name each rule separately, then check the options against both. An option that satisfies one rule but not the other is a designed trap.

How to practise effectively

This is the most trainable EPSO test: pattern recognition compounds with volume. Practise daily in short timed sets, and after every mistake, write down which rule you missed โ€” most candidates discover they fail one specific family (usually reflection vs. rotation) rather than being generally weak.
